WSNA won the Mother Jones Organizational Award on July 26 at the annual Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) convention for our work on rest breaks legislation. Co-recipients were SEIU Healthcare 1199NW and UFCW21.
The WSLC Mother Jones Award recognizes the struggle for dignity and respect for all working men and women in our state. Traditionally, two awards are given, one to an individual and one to an organization. Winners exemplify the tradition of Mary “Mother” Jones’ immortal statement, “Pray for the Dead and Fight like hell for the Living!”
WSNA, SEIU Healthcare 1199NW, and UFCW 21 fought for 10 years, and on April 24 finally won, SHB 1155 legislation to promote hospital patient safety by guaranteeing uninterrupted meal and rest breaks and enhanced mandatory overtime protections for nurses and frontline health care workers in Washington state.
